How to Stabilize Iraq After ISIS—and Why it Matters

As military campaigns in Iraq and Syria recovered territories from the rule of the Islamic State extremist group, the 67-nation Global Coalition met in Washington on July 11-13, 2017. Vital questions for the coalition included the strategy to build long-term security and stability in the region. Following the coalition’s meetings, the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) hosted a conversation with Ambassador Ekkehard Brose, who co-chaired the coalition’s “Stabilization Working Group”, and Joseph Pennington, deputy assistant secretary of state for Iraq. The discussion was held on July 14, 2017 and moderated by Sarhang Hamasaeed, USIP’s former director of Middle East programs.
