After the ISIS Flag Falls: The Future of Mosul and Iraq

On June 28, 2017, Sarhang Hamasaeed spoke at a panel co-hosted by the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) and The Heritage Foundation. The event was organized as Iraqi troops were closing in on the last of ISIS’s forces in the city of Mosul. The government’s recovery of the main ISIS stronghold in Iraq was opening a new phase in the country’s struggle for stability. The panel discussed the need to resolve longstanding domestic conflicts that contributed to ISIS’ rise in the first place and avert new cycles of vengeance arising from the terrorists’ brutal, three-year reign in Iraq’s northwest.
